Sayreville Board of Education
Honors SWMHS Math Teacher
MATTHEW PEREIRA The Board of Education honored SWMHS Math Teacher Matthew Pereira with a special resolution at its
September meeting. Two weeks after the conclusion of the 2006-07 school year, Mr. Pereira was vacationing in Seaside Park when he heard a child screaming for help who was caught in a rip current in the ocean. With no lifeguards present, Mr. Pereira swam out to the victim and rescued her. The Board honored our hero with the following resolution: Sayreville Board of Education Resolution #2007-08-002 WHEREAS, the Sayreville Board of Education employs highly qualified school personnel to insure the safety
of our students and staff; and WHEREAS, Mr. Matthew Pereira is employed by the Sayreville Board of Education for that purpose as a Mathematics Teacher at the Sayreville War Memorial High School; and WHEREAS, it has come to this Board's attention that Mr. Pereira has gone above and beyond the call of duty; and WHEREAS, this Board of Education is truly grateful for the quick thinking shown by Mr. Pereira in an emergency situation; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Education of the Borough of Sayreville, County of Middlesex, State of New Jersey, hereby commends and honors Mr. Matthew Pereira, Mathematics Teacher at Sayreville War Memorial High School, for his unselfish dedication and for his quick action which resulted in saving the life of a drowning child; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Board encourage other members of the Sayreville community to follow the example of this remarkable teacher; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution, executed by the President and the Business Administrator/Board Secretary on behalf of the
Sayreville Board of Education, be presented to Mr. Matthew Pereira at the Regular Meeting of the Board of
Education, this Eighteenth day of September, Two Thousand and Seven. ------------------ The Sayreville Choir has been selected to perform at Walt Disney World's Candlelight Procession in Epcot Center on December 2, 2007. The choir will perform with high school students from across the country to perform music with full orchestra to accompany the telling of the Christmas Story. The celebrity narrator for the performance will be Emmy-Award winning actor Dennis Franz (NYPD Blue, Hill Street Blues). This marks the fourth time that the choir has been selected through the audition process. The Sayreville Choir has previously appeared at the Candlelight Procession with Miss America, Ben Vereen and Haley Joel Osment. ----------------- Congratulations to our Athletic
Director, Mr. John Kohutanycz, for being selected as the Greater Middlesex
Conference Athletic Director of the Year!
A great big THANK YOU goes out to the Sayreville War
Memorial High School National Honor Society and advisor, Sarah Rodis-Magaw,
who presented Mary Ann Gordon from BIC (Brain Injured Children) a check
for $2,000. This represents the profit from the National Honor Society
Spaghetti Dinner in April. It is our largest donation ever and a
tremendous accomplishment for these young people. Yet another testament
to the Sayreville students and staff for their community support!
